April 2004

i'm really glad that this march http://www.nytimes.com/2004/04/26/politics/26RALL.html (note, registration probably required) for women's rights happened on sunday and that the mainstream media gave it halfway decent coverage. saying that "hundreds of thousands" marched is a huge step for nytimes coverage which mentioned that "thousands" marched when 300,000 plus showed up to protest the war in iraq (that hadn't happened yet) february 15th, 2003.

i'm always amazed that when 500,000 to 1,000,000 people show up to a march that they feel compelled to mention the several hundred "counter demonstrators" at least they didn't show pictures of the counter demonstrators and instead have some rather great photos of the entire mall filled with people. this of course is probably because the "counter demonstrators" were holding photos of aborted fetuses.

scary to think its been 30 years. read the comments at the end of this article,

Consciousness Is The Only Medicine Against Violence

Dear Friends

For the scientific development of human consciousness its "functional
aspect" is of the same importance as its "bio-physical aspect": it is
important to search for the bio-physical origin of consciousness, but it
is also important to practice techniques that help to awaken human
consciousness. One of the main techniques that awakens consciousness is
watching (witnessing). Human beings have the capacity to watch and
become aware of the way the mind functions, and to watch and become
aware of body movements and breathing. Watching is an individual
research method that leads to a conscious experience of the world. It is
a method that allows human beings to grow beyond religious, national and
racial conditioning.

History and today situation in the world confirm that violence can not
be uprooted with violence. Consciousness Is The Only Medicine Against
Violence. Scientific development of human consciousness is a mission of
our institute, we are inviting you for cooperation. Do not hesitate to
contact us for any further information. More about our institute see on

This speech by Haile Selassie was made to the U.N. in 1963 and inspired the Bob Marley song: "War". It is fitting that the warnings and predictions he makes are evident today, 41 years later, when the U.N. faces similar problems of legitimacy, post colonial wars continue, and the abrogation of international rules and laws by nations with power is ever more evident.

The file is an mp3 file and is the original UN tape - listen to it with headphones for the best effect, H.I.M. Haile Selassie is in the left channel and the english translator in the right channel.
