The Protagonists

An unlikely group of savage and shell-shocked survivors.

 Kitkat Tampiri

A brave and intelligent young Filipino woman who worked as a Cabin Stewardess for the Penthouse Verandah Suites on the Navigation deck. Kitkat is protective of her good friend Diday, and is determined to stand up to this new threat and make sure they both survive, and that the walking dead are exterminated.

 Bongbong Pinpin

Bongbong is one of the legion of unseen crew members who keeps the ship tidy when no one is watching. He secretly hates the haughty Europeans who run the ship and keep everyone else oppressed, but he wisely keeps it to himself most of the time, and keeps his job. Bongbong is a survivor, having risen from a dead-end life in the Philippines to his current position, and will use any means at his disposal to keep himself safe.

 Jack Casey

Jack Casey (possibly not his real name) is an affable man in his late twenties, with a strong smile and a unkempt appearance. Up until the outbreak, he lived in an abandoned fish cannery on Baranof Island, AK, operating his illegal pot growing operation and regularly flying his product up and down the coast. He has a daughter (Julie) and an ex-wife (Susan).

 Jody Sydney

Jody Sydney is a Tlingit fisherman from Angoon, AK. When the epidemic broke out in Alaska, Jody was onboard The Endurance the boat he worked with Captain Doug Smarch and his family. Jody watched his crew and family, including his wife, succumb to the infection after they put in at Barinoff Island for supplies. A broken Jody sooned joined Jack Casey and the survivors of the MS Amsterdam as they journeyed to Sitka to find Casey's daughter. In the process Jody saw the epidemic unfolding and realized that this was his fault for angering his people's spirits. Jody has become a hard man, but he has a soft spot for the innocent Julie Casey.

 Chico ?

Chico is a heavy-set Mexican-American restaurant owner who ran a Pizza shop in Sitka, AK. When the outbreak happened, he fled with his waitress/girlfriend Rita to the harbor, where he met up with Kitkat and the other survivors. After some painful negotiations, they fled to Seattle with the group.

 Doctor Sanjeev "Sonny" Gupta

Dr. Gupta is a short Indian man in his early 30's, with a round face and a large nose. He tends towards pudginess, but shows a recent loss of weight. He typically wears an N95 respirator mask, and is wearing a cheap members-only jacket with the Targeted Genetics logo embossed on the breast. Sanjeev is an organic chemist for TarGen, based in Seattle. TarGen focuses on gene delivery of molecular treatments for a variety of diseases, at least publicly.

 Craig Williams

Craig Williams, a Seattle Transit bus driver and part-time Bigfoot researcher. He's a straight-up sort of guy, quiet and laconic and comfortable tramping around the cascades. He's got a cabin up in Stevens Pass outside Skykomish where he tracks the elusive man-apes on the weekends.

 Passengers

There are upwards of 1300 passengers on board the MS Amsterdam, coming primarily from Europe and North America to see the wonders of the Inside Passage and the Alaskan Panhandle. The Passengers skew toward an older demographic, including many retirees and middle-aged couples. There are relatively few children on board, despite special ammenities designed for them.

Dr. Leonard Smallwood, Disabled Curmudgeon

Leonard is a retired doctor with a notable medical condition. He is constrained by a wheelchair and an oxygen tank, and has great trouble getting around the ship. He's only on board because his daughter browbeat him into enjoying his retirement by seeing Alaska. Dr. Smallwood is an old curmudgeon who resents his failing health and dependence. He'll rage at anyone he can, while also demanding their help. His redeeming quality is that he's full of practical medical advice and and an able leader who has been around the block a few times.

Danny Conroy, 8 Year Old Boy

Danny came aboard with his mother for his first cruise. He loved alaska and didn't even get seasick. Then the outbreak happened, and with it a wash of horrible memories that Danny has now suppressed. Having lost his mother somewhere, he's now following Dave Schmidt and Whiskey Reyes and hoping to wake up from this nightmare soon.

Gertie Simms, Nutty Church Lady

Ms. Simms, a British woman in her fifties, came aboard with her family to celebrate her mother's birthday. After watching her family massacre one another, she determined that these were the end times, and this outbreak the will of God. "It's Judgement Upon Us" she says, quietly counseling other survivors to accept their fate. With her calm, persistent demeanor, Gertie has captured the spirit of a number of passengers and undermined Mr. Becker's authority as Security Chief. She is now manipulating his group of officers to her own ends, effectively creating her own religious cult.

Gaston Connolly, Businessman

A shell-shocked survivor, Connolly was on board to make business contacts, a plan which has now gone to hell. Connolly has been drunk most of the time since the outbreak, but that hasn't tarnished his winning smile and smooth manner.

Ryan Forrest, Alaskan State Trooper

Officer Forrest boarded the ship in Glacier Bay, following an incident with a crashed airplane. He was given permission to conduct the victims' bodies back to Seattle discreetly aboard the ship.

 Officers

The Officers are responsible for all aspects of running the ship, and coordinate with the Hotel staff to ensure the safety and comfort of the passengers. Officers aboard the MS Amsterdam are primarly Dutch or English in nationality.

Thomas Mertens, Ship Security Officer

Thomas is an able security officer, but is a bit overwhelmed by the extremity of the current emergency. He spends his time watching over the survivors around him and desperately trying to raise the senior staff on his walkie talkie. He is discreetly carrying a .45 sidearm.

Mr. Jurgen Becker, Chief Security Officer

A tough old German officer with decades of experience behind the soft job of Chief Security for a cruise ship. A bit of aHeart of DarknessKurtz character. Jurgen oranized a "Fort Apache" safehouse on the Navigation deck, intent on protecting his men and what passengers they could gather. This effort was undermined by both an assault from the protagonist survivors and the religious rantings of Gertie Simms, which upset Becker's weight of authority. In the end, he organized his men into an escape attempt, shooting their way through the ship to the last of the lifeboats. Leadership, Sway - Adept

Lukas De Vries, Ship Security Officer

A surly officer who was working for Mr. Becker when he was subdued by Kitkat and Bongbong. After seeing their security office safehouse fall into chaos, Lukas took his gear- including a vicious looking Ulu knife- and left to make his own escape.

Thomas Mertens, Ship Security Officer

Thomas is an able security officer, but is a bit overwhelmed by the extremity of the current emergency. He spent his time initially watching over the survivors around him and desperately trying to raise the senior staff on his walkie talkie. He accompanied Kitkat and others to the bridge in an attempt to keep them safe and under control, but after their confrontation with Becker, he is now simply another survivor.

 Staff

The hotel staff for the cruise, these folks reside in "the Ghetto" (the off-limits deck between the Dolphin deck and "Deck Zero") or in the nicer cabins among the passengers. Depending on their position, these staff members are allowed to mix to a greater degree with the passengers. Jobs include Beauty salon workers, hotel staff, cruise activities directors, casino staff, gift shop employees and many others. The staff come from all nationalities, but are predominantly from Europe, Australia, or North America.

Diday Bautista, Beautician

Diday is a Filipino beautician, and Kitkat's best friend. Diday is slight of stature and has a knack for getting herself into trouble.

Whiskey Reyes, Showgirl

Whiskey ("That's what my daddy called me") is a slim, attractive girl in a sequined dress, heels, and security officer raincoat. She performed in the Queen's Lounge seven nights a week, up until the outbreak. After that she found herself under the protection of Mr. Becker and then the group of survivors that included little Danny, of whom she felt protective. Whiskey is terrified, and needs all the help she can get.

 Ruben Meijer

Reuben was a Cruise Staff member who spent his days planning on-board events to entertain passengers. He was liked and trusted by passengers, and truly enjoyed helping them find the best shopping opportunities and caring for their wellbeing. This all changed with the outbreak aboard the ship, of course, and Ruben missed much of the initial horror after locking himself in a supply closet. He fortuitously met Kitkat and the others just before they made they escape attempt.

 Crew

The crew members are the unseen masses who keep the ship running in a clean, orderly fashion. They include seaman, housekeeping staff, engineers, repairmen, kitchen workers, and many others. They live primarily on Deck Zero, the lowest deck of the ship, in cramped quarters. Crew members come primarily from "third-world" countries like Indonesia, the Philippines, India, etc. While the crew have the least exposure to passengers, they make up the bulk of the work force aboard ship.

Ervin de Jesus, Cleaner

Ervin is a member of the housekeeping staff, and has been serving on the Amsterdam for years. He considers the crew his family. Since the outbreak, he fell in with a group of survivors including Emily Eisdman, with whom he has fallen in love.

Arti Onbekend, Prep Cook

A pretty, terrified young woman, Arti wears a blood-spattered cook's uniform and carries a large kitchen knife. She doesn't say much, and doesn't truly understand why everyone is acting homicidal. She's hoping to survive until the morning, when everyone and everything will surely go back to normal.

Andreas Mortensen, Mechanic

A tall, broadly-built Norwegian in a mechanics jumpsuit. Mortensen is a talented greasemonkey and a loyal member of the ship's crew. He knows his place in the ship's hierarchy and follows orders from officers. On the other hand, he doesn't care for the many Filipino and Indonesian crew members, and regards them with disdain at best. Andreas carries a large spanner in case he needs to adjust someone's skull.

"Captain" Budi, Leader of the Indonesian Gang

Budi, once a steward, has now taken control of a large gang of Indonesian crew members bent on "cleansing the ship's decks of infection", taking control of the bridge, and pointing the ship to their home country. This cleansing apparently includes both the walking dead and anyone else who isn't Indonesian. Budi and his gang are all but savages, having determined that civilization is dead and laws no longer apply.

 The Dead

Those named characters who died and got up again, with a hunger...

Dr. Ellsworth Lansing, Ship's Doctor

Dr. Lansing was treating an elderly passenger in cardiac arrest when the patient died and came back to life under the defibrillator. The patient bit off two of Lansing's fingers, causing him to stab the patient in the chest in panic. Seeing this, a crew member (Bongbong) struck Lansing with a stainless steel tray, knocking him unconscious, to stop him from attacking the patient. Unfortunately, this simply made Dr. Lansing an easy meal for the hungry passenger, as everyone else fled.

 Emily Erdman

A college student on board the Amsterdam with her sorority sisters and their boyfriends. Emily quickly grew tired of her drunken idiot companions and sought out the more interesting forbidden company of the crew on Deck Zero. Making friends of the crew and staff in the crew bar gave Emily a safe place to go when the infection went rampant aboard the ship. Emily is slight and athletic, giving her an advantage over the slow undead. However, she is perhaps a bit too trusting of her new crew member friends.

 Dave Schmidt

Dave was a park ranger and a bush pilot for the State of Alaska until he blew out his knee in an accident. Now, wearing a full-leg brace he works as a naturalist tour guide aboard the ship. He's a tough but likeable character, with a natural sense of curiousity that is likely to get him eaten.
