Njala's Three Champions are summoned. Travels in Afarhár and Sariola. The slaying of Lúnninuktu and the return of the Griðastaðr horde. A journey to Busaland. It came to pass that, in the dark days of the Álvar's return to the Middle World, some men were sent abroad at old Njala's command. They were Korsteinn Open-Hand, of the Álvarhamrmaðr, Vorðus Flokkison the seiðrmaðr, and Eymir Olþursson, a ferocious ulfhednar. Vorðus had lost his hands to the Helvegrmaðr and had replaced them with magical metal ones, forged by the Dvergr Kjugu-Skegg at great cost. Eymir had broken with his friðavigr, the very same Helvegrmaðr, and now scorned them. Together with Korsteinn they made an odd but strong friðavigr of their own, and they had many adventures. Njala had climbed into her tall seiðhjallr and from that place worked magic against the invaders. In Ferðuhvalurland, those who had once hated magic now embraced it. The Álvar, who can smell magic, were drawn to her and did Njala what harm they could. One powerful svartálvar named Lúnninuktu battled Njala and nearly broke her. He was driven from Ferðu shores, but he took with him the both Raðikurr and the Fjaðrcap of Brevænn as war-prizes. These precious artifacts were part of the scattering of the Hall, the Griðastaðr or Great Protection, and had been recovered through great peril by the Helvegrmaðr and Álvarhamrmaðr respectively. Njala called upon Korsteinn and his companions to recover these things. They agreed at once and equipped a longshjp with the tiller or Or-Æfi. They readied themselves for a long and arduous journey and left their homes and kin behind. The tiller took them first to Afarhár, the Island of the Tower, where Lúnninuktu sought refuge with Snædis, the Snow Maiden. Her nið-curse broken, Snædis had long since fled that place for the fortresses of her allies in the Half-World. Lúnninuktu fought the friðavigr in that icy wasteland, and when near death he confused them with magic and fled. Vorðus Flokkison had a magical lodestone called Jarnviðja, the Iron Wife, and with this was able to divine Lúnninuktu's movements. They followed him north, through Varmalek and hordes of Álvar, into the parched sands of Sariola. There they slew him and his armies, and recovered the artifacts of the Griðastaðr. These they returned to Njala, who thanked and honored them. These travels took almost two years, and they saw and learned many things. Despite their exertions and the desperate state of affairs in their homeland, the Jarnviðja would not be still and urged them west. Thus, again they left Ferðuhvalurland and sailed first to Myrkyrland, where all was chaos, and then on to Busaland, where they were set upon by berg-risi under the command of the hated Kuses Sud. The crew of their longship were all slain, and their ship damaged. In Busaland they also met Hunila, Goddess of the Busa, and in time became part of the Álvarharmaðr. And so begins another tale, and ends this one. | Home | |
