Roger P. Hoffman was the co-pilot of a B-17 that was forced down on the Greenland ice cap by bogus radio transmissions from the secret nazi "Eidelweiss" transmitter. The plane went down close to an ice fissure, opened by recent earthquakes (also caused by Eidelweiss' weather-control experiments), and Hoffman and his crew were abducted by vicious extradimensional aliens. Hoffman was tortured and had half his skeletal structure replaced by alien metal (the right half).
Hoffman's "living metal" infection continues to convert calcium to alien steel, and the process is agonizingly painful. He has developed a powerful morphine habit to compensate, and is clinically depressed. He wears a leather glove with metal tips so that he can handle small objects without crushing them. With the call sign "Halfman", he participates in DET-66/SG.
