RE: Operation Rise and Shine

Lord Jeffers Walmsley was a post captain in the admiralty dealing with Overlord logistics. In early April he sent an urgent cable demanding that the training exercise Operation Tiger be cancelled. He had experienced horrific nightmares of massive loss of life. He was ignored. His prediction was 100% accurate, down to the twin E-boats and casualty figures.

Walmsley was relieved of active duty in late April suffering from debilitating neurologic distress - a nervous breakdown. He was sent home to Walsmley Chase in Great Yarmouth and died there of heart failure, suddenly, on May 10.

MI-5/20's attention was called to the matter when Winston Churchill complained to his personal physician of nervous exhaustion and horrific nightmares of the Normandy invasion.

MI-5/20 has been monitoring the Enigma broadcasts of a German agent known as Die Shlaeffer, The Sleeper. The Sleeper commented on someone code-named "Todd" around the time of Walmsley's original cable and subsequent death. Recent broadcasts compare "Bunting" to "Todd". It is known that Bunting refers to Churchill.

The Sleeper has been active since 1940. He broadcasts from southeast England, most likely from the vicinity of Colchester. Originally thought to be sending intelligence to German wolf packs, he uses a German navy enigma cipher with a difficult code overlayed atop it. The overlay was broken only when turned over to MI-5/20, where Professor Edmondsen recognized it as Enochian, the invented language of Dr. John Dee. This fact points to an AsA connexion.

Translated messages appear to be reports of the observation of prominent citizens, all referred to by code name. We know from correlational analyses that the Sleeper is observing Churchill ("bunting") and Eisenhower ("apple"). There are a half-dozen others mentioned that we have been unable to identify - the messages are extremely terse and limited by the crude Enochian syntax. Nothing about the Sleeper's reports indicates a source of information more detailed than what could be gleaned from English newspapers in most cases.

While MI-5/20 is confident that the Sleeper could be located and brought in, no attempt has been made to contact him. His unusual messages pose no apparent threat and may provide important intelligence. From his communication thus far, we can be reasonably sure the Sleeper fits the following profile:

• A native English speaker, most probably a recruited rather than native agent.
• Male, over the age of thirty.
• A local resident of southeast England (Colchester vicinity) with ample privacy and space for a clandestine transmitter.

We are concerned that The Sleeper either posesses or has access to a weapon of some sort that can cause psychological distress and death. Magic and the occult cannot be ruled out. MI-5/20 has decided that the Sleeper needs to be brought into custody and his materials and methods discovered. There is some urgency in this matter, given the invasion timeline and Churchill's nightmares and physical state.

The MI-5/20 case officer for the Sleeper is Flight Lieutenant Corwin Cobb, who has been placed as an RAF recruiter in Essex. Cobb, who was raised in Norwich, has identified several likely suspects, including a former English Fascist Union agitator and a right-leaning Colchester University dean. Cobb will be your principal contact and is expecting you.
