Dear Frau Liemann,

On the Furher's orders, I cannot tell you my name. Suffice it to say that I am a soldier of the fatherland, like your own son, Detlef. Therefore, it is my sad duty to report to you that your son has been killed in action. I take no joy in being the bearer of this news and I can only hope that my earnest sympathy is of some little comfort to you.

For reasons of national security, I cannot tell you where Detlef was killed, or even where he has been laid to rest. I can tell you, however, that I was there with him in the end, and that he died bravely. Even in his last moments, when death was a certainty, he struggled on, refusing to give up, determined to serve his people and his nation until the very last. As a soldier who has seen much horror in war, and many good men die, I was proud to have known your son if only in those moments.

Detlef's superiors will be sending along his personal effects to you, along with their own condolences. If you need anything, please contact them. And in these moments, you should know that your son did not give his life in vain- The many sons of Deutschland have taken up the banner that Detlef carried, and we will carry his spirit with us to victory!

Sincerely,

~G~
